HAWAII STUDENT SUITES OFFERS FINANCIAL AID DEFERMENT TO ALL RESIDENTS

HONOLULU,Hawaii (March 2, 2010)-Hawaii Student Suites announces that they will extend financial aid deferment to all residents.  In the past, only HPU students were able to apply due to the relationship HSS had with HPU.  Now, all residents that apply to live at HSS will be given the opportunity to be part of the Financial Aid Deferment plan which allows students to pay only $150.00 per month for their rent and pay the entire semester after their financial aid is dispersed.  This program allows students that could normally not afford to pay their housing out of pocket to use their loans and grants to cover their rent.

This program will be available for students applying for Fall 2010 leases and beyond. Students can apply for both the Fall and Spring semesters. This program will not be offered in the summer.

* Please note that students living or applying to Waikiki West Student Suites will not be eligible.

Hawaiian Island Homes offers dorm units in Waikiki

HONOLULU, Hawai’i (July 10, 2009) – Hawaiian Island Homes announced today that it will take over management of two low-rise garden apartment hotels in Waikiki: the 70-unit Hawaiiana Hotel and 77-unit Whitesands Hotel. Each property will accept student dorm rentals that will be managed by Hawaiian Student Suites, a subsidiary of Hawaiian Island Homes.  This will add 200 beds to HSS’s dorm rental inventory. 

HSS currently operates dorms at Kalo Terrace, Waikiki West, Tradewinds Mauka, and Ala Moana Towers.  In total, HSS provides more than 700 dorm beds for student rentals.

The Hawaiiana and Whitesands are treasured for their open space, lush landscaping and low-rise design amongst the high rises that dominate Waikiki, the properties offer a tranquil setting, swimming pools, laundry rooms, cable TV, wireless internet service, and daily 24-hour front desk service.  

“Waikiki is a great place for a dorm,” said Peter Savio, owner Hawaiian Island Homes.“  It (Waikiki) has great bus service and everything is within walking distance. The students who have to work part time jobs can get them in Waikiki and walk to work.”

“For neighbor-island kids, Waikiki is a fun place to start a college experience.  Oahu students may find living in a dorm in Waikiki a cost-effective and time-efficient choice over driving daily from the country,” Savio added.

HSS will operate The Beachwalk Dorm at the Hawaiiana Hotel, and has priced a bed in a double room at $595 per month and $925 per month for a studio, single occupancy. The Beachwalk is located at 260 Beach Walk in Waikiki. 

The Whitesands rates are confirmed at $925 per month for a studio, single occupancy, $395 to $595 per month based on double occupancy, $425 to $495 per month based on triple occupancy.  Whitesands is located at 431 Nohonani Street in Waikiki. 

The rooms are approximately 300 square feet studios with a kitchen and bathroom. Dorm beds are open to registered students with leases available by semester, annual bases and during the summer. The leases will start the week before the University of Hawai`i’s fall semester begins on August 22nd.  In addition to the monthly rent, a $550 fee is required to cover the security deposit, application fee, and a criminal check.  Limited parking is available off-site for roughly $150, per month. Rates are valid until July 25, 2009.  After this date, the rates will increase to market and be available to off-island students.

Hawaiiana Hotel employees will be retained and HIH will rehire Whitesands employees as needed.

Beachwalk is located at 260 Beachwalk Ave, one block from the famous Waikiki Beach. This is a smaller dorm with about seventy students.  It is a two story walk-up granden style community centered around a sparkling pool.  At this location it is one hundred percent students.  There is also one of the three buildings that is graduate student preferred.

We are currently working with HPU to allow HPU students to use their grants and loans to pay for their rent with Hawaii Student Suites!  How this program works is that you would fill out a Financial Aid Deferment Form with us and if approved would pay only $150.00 each month in rent until your aid comes in.  Once your loans are in (usually around mid semester) HPU will cut us a check for the remaining balance of your rent.  This program allows many students to afford living with us while attending HPU.  Deferment forms are on our website under forms and applications.   Feel free to e-mail us in the meantime about this program at aprilt@hihltd.com.

                I would like to move into Kalo for one real reason and that is Kalo’s close proximity to the University of Hawaii.  The location is a ten minute walk, five minutes to skate to my classes.  This is very important to me because this means I can sleep in a little later and I do not have to desperately search for parking in the morning.  These two factors alone enable me to wake up an hour and a half later than I would if I lived at my parent’s house in Kailua.

                Another reason for me wanting to move into Kalo is the atmosphere of the building itself.  Before my decision to move to Kalo, I was living in a one bedroom apartment complex where the other tenants were much older than me.  This posed a challenge for me since I view myself as very social.  Living in an apartment with others that are roughly my age and all of which are still going to school seems like it would be ideal for me.  I already know a few of the tenants because they are in my classes and have hung out with them on a few occasions. I really enjoyed how the other tenants are very friendly and welcoming.

                The location of Kalo is ideal for school but also situated near many shops.  There are a few coffee shops around the area that are very nice and a good place to get some homework done.  There are also many grocery stores around the area including Down to Earth and Star Market.  Not to mention there are many places to eat offering a variety of choices ranging from Greek to sushi.  Bank of Hawaii is located right on University Ave. which is very convenient.  There is also a great ice cream shop located next to the bank.  The location of Kalo is also an ideal location for an essay route into Waikiki.  This works out well for me because I like to surf and it’s a short drive from Kalo to a number of surf spots on the south side.

                Kalo Terrace seems like a great place for me because it is conveniently located close to my daily routines such as school, gym, and friends.  It also seems like a great opportunity to learn because it provides me a place to study and get my school work done.  These apartments are fully furnished so I don’t have to worry twice this year about furnishing an apartment.  Kalo Terrace meets all my wants and needs overall because it’s a convenient location, and I have always wanted to experience living in a dorm.

                The location of Kalo Terrace is ideal because I have several friends that live just mintues away in the U dorms, and it is relatively close to my school, Heald College.  As a result I don’t have to wake up and leave awfully early for things such as school.  This area is also suitable because I know my way around this part of the Island.

                I have several reasons as to why I have always looked forward to living in a dorm while attending college.  First of all I love to meet new people.  I come from the small island of Kauai where everyone already knows each other; therefore, I am excited to meet people from other places typically to expand my knowledge of other places and make new friends.  Living in the dorm will also promote me to take time to study and do school work because I will be surrounded by other students.
