Hawaiian Island Homes offers dorm units in Waikiki

HONOLULU, Hawai’i (July 10, 2009) – Hawaiian Island Homes announced today that it will take over management of two low-rise garden apartment hotels in Waikiki: the 70-unit Hawaiiana Hotel and 77-unit Whitesands Hotel. Each property will accept student dorm rentals that will be managed by Hawaiian Student Suites, a subsidiary of Hawaiian Island Homes.  This will add 200 beds to HSS’s dorm rental inventory. 

HSS currently operates dorms at Kalo Terrace, Waikiki West, Tradewinds Mauka, and Ala Moana Towers.  In total, HSS provides more than 700 dorm beds for student rentals.

The Hawaiiana and Whitesands are treasured for their open space, lush landscaping and low-rise design amongst the high rises that dominate Waikiki, the properties offer a tranquil setting, swimming pools, laundry rooms, cable TV, wireless internet service, and daily 24-hour front desk service.  

“Waikiki is a great place for a dorm,” said Peter Savio, owner Hawaiian Island Homes.“  It (Waikiki) has great bus service and everything is within walking distance. The students who have to work part time jobs can get them in Waikiki and walk to work.”

“For neighbor-island kids, Waikiki is a fun place to start a college experience.  Oahu students may find living in a dorm in Waikiki a cost-effective and time-efficient choice over driving daily from the country,” Savio added.

HSS will operate The Beachwalk Dorm at the Hawaiiana Hotel, and has priced a bed in a double room at $595 per month and $925 per month for a studio, single occupancy. The Beachwalk is located at 260 Beach Walk in Waikiki. 

The Whitesands rates are confirmed at $925 per month for a studio, single occupancy, $395 to $595 per month based on double occupancy, $425 to $495 per month based on triple occupancy.  Whitesands is located at 431 Nohonani Street in Waikiki. 

The rooms are approximately 300 square feet studios with a kitchen and bathroom. Dorm beds are open to registered students with leases available by semester, annual bases and during the summer. The leases will start the week before the University of Hawai`i’s fall semester begins on August 22nd.  In addition to the monthly rent, a $550 fee is required to cover the security deposit, application fee, and a criminal check.  Limited parking is available off-site for roughly $150, per month. Rates are valid until July 25, 2009.  After this date, the rates will increase to market and be available to off-island students.

Hawaiiana Hotel employees will be retained and HIH will rehire Whitesands employees as needed.

White Sands

White Sands is located at 431 Nohonani St., Honolulu,HI 96815. It is two blocks from Waikiki Beach.  This is a smaller dorm with under sixty students and is also a hotel.  It is a three-story walk-up building with a pool, hot tub and even a waterfall!  This cute community has lots of flora surrounding the courtyard.  There is a twenty-four hour help desk and a wonderful staff to assist your needs.
